In the Shipyard

General MacArthur
Last year Callan Marine added a Jones Act cutterhead suction dredge (CSD) General MacArthur, the newest and largest dredger in Callen Marine's fleet. The 32-in. General MacArthur is 100% diesel electric. General MacArthur was built in two shipyards, C&C Marine and Repair and SPI/Mobile Pulley Works. General MacArthur is 290 ft. long, and with the 180-ft. idler barge attached, the dredge has a maximum swing radius of 530 ft. The beam is 72 ft., with a depth 16 ft. and draft 8 – 11 ft. The digging depth is 97 ft. with a suction diameter of 34 in. and a discharge diameter 32 in. The vessel is equipped with three CAT-MAK diesel electric engines that provide 24,000 hp (18,000 kw) of power.

CSD Alyarmouk
Arab Potash Company (APC) and Royal IHC (IHC) launched the cutter suction dredger (CSD) Alyarmouk at IHC’s shipyard in Krimpena/dIJssel, The Netherlands. The vessel is a 3,557kW CSD and a further developed copy of the dredger Jarash, which IHC delivered to APC in 2018. APC will use Alyarmouk at its site in Jordan, where it will cut and remove crystallized salt under harsh conditions.Alyarmouk is the last of three contracts signed between APC and IHC earlier this year. The first was for an IHC Beaver 65, a 2,819-kW dismountable CSD that was modified in order to work efficiently in the Dead Sea. The second was a three-year maintenance deal for the IHC dredgers Jarash and Mutah, with the purpose of achieving and maintaining an agreed level of uptime.

CSD Hussein Tantawy
The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) and Royal IHC (IHC) late last year launched thecutter suction dredger (CSD) Hussein Tantawy from IHC’s shipyard in Krimpena/dIJssel, The Netherlands. Hussein Tantawyand sister vessel, MohabMameeshare among the largest vessels of their kind and were both specifically designed by IHC in close cooperation with SCA. Like its sister-ship, Hussein Tantawy is a 29,190kW heavy-duty rock CSD and will be used to maintain and improve the Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean and Red seas. The vessel, characterized by its long slender shape and high spud towers, will have an overall length of 147.4m and provide a maximum dredging depth of 35m. Equipped with one submerged and two inboard dredge pumps, the installed cutter power will be 4,800kW.

Jan De NulVessels Earn ULEVNotation
Five Jan De Nul trailing suction hopper dredgers – Sanderus, Ortelius, Tristao Da Cuhna, Afonso de Albuquerque and Diogo Cao – received a new ultra-low emission vessels(ULEV)from Bureau Veritas. The units are designed for ultra-low emissions, including the installation of a two-stage catalytic filter system. The voluntary ULEV notation accounts for air quality, including hydrocarbons, carbon, NOx, and particulate matter, as well as particle numbers.
Jan De Nul Group is adopting 100% renewable fuel, as a certified sustainable substitute for fossil fuel made from waste flows. “Even if the dredging industry accounts for only 0.1% of the total emission of global shipping traffic, we feel personally involved in this issue and regard it as one of our core missions to do something about it,”said Michel Deruyck, Head of Energy at Jan De Nul Group.

SMS Group Refits Arco Dart
SMS Group started 2021 with a D Class refit of Arco Dart on behalf of Hanson Aggregate Marine.Hanson is Europe’s largest producer of marine-dredged sand and gravel, and operates a fleet of purpose-built trailing suction hopper dredgers, which vary in size from 1,300 to 5,500 gross tonnes and are designed to extract sand and gravel from the seabed at depths of up to 50 metres.Work on Arco Dart included: shell plate and stiffener renewals and repairs; manufacture and installation of new life raft frames; modifications to breather pipework; removal and renewal of dredge pipe assemblies; bi-annual hydraulics works; motor rewinds and replacements; renewal of portside mooring bollards; various machining projects; electrical works to the main switchboard; bilge cleanings; and a variety of pipeworks.
TSHD Frederick Paup
Manson Construction last year signed a contract with Keppel AmFELS to build a new hopper dredge in Brownsville, Texas. The new dredge is scheduled to be fully operational by spring 2023. The self-propelled trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Frederick Paup will be the largest in the United States, representing Manson’s single biggest investment in its 115-year history. The 15,000 cu. yd. hopper dredge — designed in collaboration with Hockema Whalen Myers Associates, Inc. of Seattle — has a length of 420 feet, breadth of 81 feet and draft of 28.5 feet. It will be highly automated with a diesel-electric power system, and built to the ABS requirements. When completed, the dredger will operate primarily along The U.S. Gulf and Atlantic coasts.
ESG Building Weeks Marine Hopper Dredge
Eastern Shipbuilding Group last year conducted the keel laying for the new trailing suction hopper dredge (TSHD) it is building for Weeks Marine. This new U.S. flag dredge R.B. Weeks, ordered by Weeks Marine in April, is beingbuilt at Eastern’sAllanton Shipyard in Panama City, Fla., for scheduled delivery in early 2023. R.B. Weeks is the second TSHD Eastern is building for the Cranford, N.J.-based marine construction and dredging contractor, following the Magdalen delivered in December of 2017.The R.B. Weeks is named in honor of Richard B. Weeks, a co-founder of Weeks Marine and husband to Magdalen Weeks, the namesake of the previously delivered sister vessel.
